Legal requirement

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to use a vehicle in a dangerous condition on a public road. Drivers have a legal duty to check their vehicle before driving. Operators with a goods vehicle or PSV licence have a specific obligation to have a formal check system in place.

Keep completed check sheets for at least 15 months. DVSA enforcement officers can request to see them at any time during a roadside check or operator compliance inspection.

1Tyres — condition, pressure, tread depth
2Wheels — nuts tight, no damage
3Lights & indicators — front, rear, hazards
4Reflectors — present and unobscured
5Mirrors — all present and adjusted
6Windscreen — no cracks in driver sightline
7Wipers & washers — working, blades intact
8Horn — operational
9Brakes — feel and parking brake
10Steering — no excessive play
11Fuel, oil, coolant levels
12Battery — charged, terminals secure
13Bodywork — no sharp edges or loose panels
14Doors — close securely
15Coupling — secure if towing
16Load security — correctly loaded, secured
17Exhaust — no excessive smoke
18Number plates — clean and legible
If a defect is found

Drivers must report defects immediately to the transport manager or fleet operator. The vehicle should not be driven until the defect is assessed. Minor defects may allow continued use with monitoring; dangerous defects require the vehicle to be taken off the road immediately.
